Filmmaker Michael Covel on Broke: The New American Dream

"[Politicians and the Federal Reserve] rigged the market," says financial author and filmmaker Michael Covel. "They rigged the market through interest rate manipulation and we're still paying for it today." In his documentary, Broke: The New American Dream, Covel explores the roots of the financial crisis, which he traces back to Netscape going public in 1995.

Covel sat down with Reason.tv's Ted Balaker to discuss the role politicians, the Federal Reserve, Wall Street, and media figures like CNBC's Jim Cramer played in the financial meltdown. Topics include: why Covel is down on "buy and hold" as an investment strategy and the differences between state lotteries and poker.

3 Reasons Why Obama Should Kick His Own Ass

President Barack Obama made news on The Today Show when he talked about kicking some ass over the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

If he is interested in punishing those responsible for what is shaping up as one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history, he should think about giving himself a boot.

While BP is ultimately responsible for the spill (and for cleaning it up), the federal government is a major player in the problem for at least three reasons:

1. It owns the property on which the oil well is located.

2. It regulates offshore drilling. And

3. In order to protect small players in the drilling industry, it capped economic damages from this sort of spill at just $75 million, a way-too-low cap that encourages risky behavior.

What We Saw at the Mortgage Bailout Demonstration...

On April 16 in Washington, D.C., the Ad Hoc National Network to Stop Evictions & Foreclosures organized a demonstration outside a meeting of the Mortgage Bankers Associaton at the Washington Court Hotel.

reason.tv's Dan Hayes and Michael C. Moynihan checked out the demonstration and talked with some of the activists, who quickly changed the subject from home loans to Castro's Cuban paradise, the need to free Mumia Abu Jamal, forgiving student loans, the Rothschilds (!), Haitians eating a mixture of dirt and oil (!?!?), and much, much more. Approximately six minutes.
